What is Medical Detox?
Drug detoxification (informally, detox) is variously the intervention in a case of physical dependence to a drug; the process and experience of a withdrawal syndrome; and any of various treatments for acute drug overdose.
A detox program for physical dependence does not necessarily address the precedents of addiction, social factors, psychological addiction, or the often-complex behavioral issues that intermingle with addiction.
The United States Department of Health and Human Services acknowledges three steps in a drug detoxification process:
- Evaluation: Upon beginning drug detoxification, a patient is first tested to see which specific substances are presently circulating in their bloodstream and the amount. Clinicians also evaluate the patient for potential co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis, and mental/behavioral issues.
- Stabilization: In this stage, the patient is guided through the process of detoxification. This may be done with or without the use of medications but for the most part the former is more common. Also part of stabilization is explaining to the patient what to expect during treatment and the recovery process. Where appropriate, people close to the addict are brought in at this time to become involved and show support.
- Guiding Patient into Treatment: The last step of the detoxification process is to ready the patient for the actual recovery process. As drug detoxification only deals with the physical dependency and addiction to drugs, it does not address the psychological aspects of drug addiction. This stage entails obtaining agreement from the patient to complete the process by enrolling in a drug rehabilitation program.
The principle of rapid detoxification is to use heavy sedation alongside dosing with opioid antagonists. This approach is expensive, ineffective and extremely dangerous. Rapid detox and ultra-rapid detox are non-standard medical detoxification protocols that have been investigated for their role in managing opioid withdrawal.
The concept of “detoxification” comes from the discredited autotoxin theory of George E. Pettey and others. David F. Musto says that “according to Pettey, opiates stimulated the production of toxins in the intestines, which had the physiological effect associated with withdrawal phenomena. […] Therefore treatment would consist of purging the body of toxins and any lurking morphine that might remain to stimulate toxin production in the future.”
Rapid Detox Controversy
Naltrexone therapy, which critics claim lacks long-term efficacy and can actually be detrimental to a patient’s long-term recovery, has led to controversy. Additionally, there have been many questions raised about the ethics as well as safety of rapid detox following a number of deaths resulting from the procedure.
Some researchers say that relapses to injection use of illicit opioids during or following repeated detoxification episodes carry the substantial potential for injury associated with uncontrolled drug use and include drug overdose, infections, and death.
How Do I Choose The Best Ohio Detox Center?
Choosing a medical detox center is an important part in your journey to recovery. One of the ways people choose a place to go is by searching “detox center near me”, but this isn’t always the best approach. Detox centers are readily available across the state of Ohio, but they are not all the same.
Researching the best option prior to committing is one of the best tools you can utilize. Whether you are looking for detox yourself, or looking for a loved one, you should know what to look for.
Hope Valley Recovery ticks all the boxes when it comes to meeting your detox needs. Our detox center is built around what is best for you or your loved one. The environment is calm and relaxing. The bedrooms are well-furnished and offer free Hulu with all paid movie channels.
In addition to the comforts of home, our medical team provides 24-hour hands on care. We are one of the few detox centers in Ohio that offer long detox tapers to their clients. We believe that the detox process should be a slow and comfortable process. This is one of the reasons we have been voted the #1 Ohio Detox Center according to Google reviewers.
Will I Go Through Physical Withdrawal?
There are many substances that require a medical detox to safely return your body to a mental, emotional, and physical equilibrium. Substances such as marijuana and stimulants will not cause physical withdrawal, but will cause mental and emotional withdrawal. Don’t worry! At Hope Valley Recovery we can safely detox you from these substances.
Physical withdrawal is typically produced when the brain has been subjected to prolonged use of certain substances. This prolonged use de-regulates the neuroreceptors in the brain as they begin producing less dopamine. As the drug begins to leave the body the brain tries to play “catch up”.
When this process begins, the body has a physiological response that creates uncomfortable symptoms. The brain and body begin to crave the dopamine that was once delivered by the drug use.
Some withdrawals, like benzodiazepines and alcohol, can cause life-threatening symptoms that must be monitored by a 24-hour medical team. Whether your searching for a detox center near you to treat benzodiazepines, alcohol, or another substance, Hope Valley Recovery is here for you.
The following list of substances are classified as those that WILL cause physical withdrawal symptoms. These should always be treated at a top detox center like Hope Valley Recovery.
- Opiates – oxycontin, fentanyl, hydrocodone, and other prescribed opioids.
- Benzodiazepines – Xanax, klonopin, ativan, valium, and other benzos.
- Other Sedatives – Lunesta, Sonata, Ambien, Zimovane.
- Many other types of tranquilizers and sedatives.
What’s Next After Detox?
Medical drug and alcohol detox are typically the first step in addiction treatment for most people. However, it is not treatment. Hope Valley recovery always recommends that clients engage in continued treatment after completing detox.
Although detox is an important part of the recovery process, it doesn’t provide the long-term clinical therapy that will create success in the client.
Research will show that the longer someone is engaged in addiction treatment the better their outcomes will be. Hope Valley Recovery offers a phased system of treatment after detox that allows clients to realize these outcomes.
We work with clients on an individual basis to help guide them to a long-term life of recovery. In order to do this, we offer the following services to our clients after detox:
Hope Valley Recovery Services Provided After Detox
All of Hope Valley Recovery’s continued services after detox include long-term transitional housing and 24-hour staff support.
- Residential Addiction Treatment (up to 45 days)
- Partial Hospitalization Addiction Treatment (up to 45 days)
- Intensive Outpatient Addiction Treatment (up to 120 days)
- Outpatient Addiction Treatment (up to 180 days)

This a a symptom that intensifies the withdrawal symptoms and bring extreme discomfort ot he client.
